Cleveland’s first political office was as Sheriff in Erie County, NY. Part of his duties were to arrange and perform executions when necessary. The “Extra Pay” for the discharge of an execution could be used to hire a professional executioner, but Cleveland declined the option and performed two hangings during his tenure as Sheriff.
